Hello, my name is James and I just turned 17 years old. I came to live with my parent when I was 3 and they adopted me. Boy they got more than they bargained for! I am diagnosed with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, Mental retardation (overall development of a 6-7 yr old), an unknown slow Bowel Disorder, and ADHD. Oh ya and what my parents lovingly call ETH (explosive teenage hormone).
I am involved in several therapy programs and activities at home, through our local hospital and at my school. I am a Boy Scout and just reached Star level of scouting. Scouting ROCKS!
Due to the Cerebral Palsy I wear AFO braces on both legs. I sometimes have to use a wheelchair if I am somewhere that requires a lot of walking or I am having a rough day and am weak. I have had several surgeries to help me continue to move & walk, my balance is poor, and my motor skills are much delayed, but I continue to learn different ways to do things that most people do with no thought.
I love to walk and at this years Relay For Life I walked 11.25 miles, I did have to use my wheelchair for balance as I walked and at times I sat in the chair as my parents or fellow scouts pushed me around the track. But my grandpa is going through his 3rd fight with cancer and I needed to do something.
I have many sensory issues with certain sounds, textures, and I need LOTS of deep pressure sensory input through out the day. If you do not know about sensory issue it is like my brain does not talk to my body. I become nervous and act out when in new places or around new people. I also have a hard time if I am around a large group of people I know. I can handle being around a hand full of people at one time, but a lot of people throws my sensory system in overdrive and I feel nervous, scared and out of place. Once I feel Okay with the new surroundings & new people, or find a "safe zone" when around a lot of people, I can relax and try to be social. This is part of my Autism.
I have a vagal nerve stimulator (VNS) implanted to help with seizure control. Some refer to this as a pacemaker for the brain. I have been seizure free for 9 months!
I take SEVERAL meds throughout the day to help with my seizures, and effects of my Autism and C.P. Medicine, Doctor Appointments, hospitals, test, and therapy have become a way of life for me.
I am now facing surgery to have the Malone Antegrade Continence Enema or MACE . This is a port that will lead to the beginning of the large intestine. I have severe Constipation that has not been resolved with diet, exercise or varies meds.
But in spite of how medical involved some people feel I am, I am a happy, carefree, and lovable young man that strives to be as independent as I can. That is way I am posting here today
My medical team has made the recommendation that I receive a multi-purpose service dog, some call them assistance dogs. My neurologist wrote the script for one, my Mom filled out all the paperwork (just like she is helping me write and word this) and I was accepted into the 4 Paws for Ability service dog program.
My dog will be trained in mobility, autism assistance as well as search and recovery. Oh, I forgot, I have a history of wanting to be so independent that I leave and don’t have anyone with me. This is not safe for me to do BUT I am just trying to be like any other teen. I have really scared my parents in the past doing this and have worked really hard not to take off. But in case I do so in the future my dog will be train to assist my parents and law enforcement in locating me.
Autism Assistance: My dog will be trained in behavior disruption. He will have both verbal and hand commands so when I start to become over whelmed my dog will have set tasks to assist me in calming down. He will also have task training to assist me with sensory issues.
Mobility Assistance: I have had many surgeries to help me continue to walk with little assistance. I do use a wheelchair when I am at locations requiring a lot of walking, standing or uneven terrain, as my legs do become weak. However I prefer to walk and my dog will be trained to help him maintain my balance, assist me when I am using my wheelchair as well as help give me physical reminders to slow down if I am trying to walk to fast, this will help me walk farther without becoming to tired .
4 Paws for Ability, is a non profit organization located in Xenia Ohio. 4 Paws For Ability strives to provide service dogs to individuals that struggle with life’s daily challenges and who would otherwise be turned away by many other agencies due to financial limitations or placed on long waiting list. Through 4 Paws the family fundraises a portion of the training cost of their service dog, for me this will be $12,000.00. Once we raise the money we will be in assigned a training class. Our training will take place in Xenia and be 11 days long. While in training my parents & I will learn all about my service dog and we will get our training on the commands and learn the all neat things my dog will be able to do.
We have already had a few fundraisers, a yard sale, a bake sale, sold candy bars, and held a trivia night fundraiser and silent auction, as well as sold 50/50 tickets, with all this we have managed to raise $5700.00. This leaves $6300.00 to raise. With my up coming surgery and my Dad being disabled, active fundraising has “to take a little back seat” as Mom says when I have my surgery.
We have a spaghetti dinner that was planned and scheduled before we learned of my new surgery needs, it is being held on Oct 27th, and Mom promises me we will still hold it. But she tells me that we will still be short. So Mom is setting our fundraising goal here to help cover some of what she thinks we will be short. I wanted to set it for all the $6300.00 but Mom tells me that is being greedy. I am now turning to you folks out in cyber space, looking for some angels to help me get my service dog.
This great dog will provide me increase independence; help me when my Autism is becoming overwhelming, and look for me if I have what Dad calls a “brain fart” LOL ---like any other teenage male I love that word fart! Right now I plan on naming my dog RUNNER. My service dog will be able to go out in public with me, like out to dinner, to the store, or even to the hospital when I have to go. That would be cool so my parents would feel better about leaving the room. I mean come on, every teen wants some alone time!!!
Check out 4 Paws for Ability and learn what an awesome organization they are. While you are there check out the Make a Dream Come True page. I am James Griggs the kid sitting on the ground in front of the Cleveland Browns Dawg sign. GO BROWNS!!!!
Thanks for any help you can send my way!
Sincerely
James Griggs

Hello from James parents. We want to thank everyone that has made pledges. Our hearts are so warmed by this act of kindness.
To all those who have left comments, Thank you so much. Without a visitor counter the only way James can see people are visiting his page is by reading the comments. Every night before bed we sit down and check the site to see if he has received any new pledges and read the comments. He is finding this so exciting!
To those who are posting this elsewhere on the web please let us know so we can take James there also, this will help him see that his message is being past along.
This page has empowered James and helps him feel more active in our fundraising efforts.

Hi James, I know its really hard to wait when you really want something, so I hope you don't have to wait too long to get Runner. Your mom is the bestest mom, and I know she is trying really hard to help you get him. I have a teenage son who has autism too, his name is Jeremy. He ran off once a long time ago and later when he could tell me why, he said it was because he wanted to take a walk. It is hard to want to do things and not be able to right away, try to wait and be patient, your Runner will be with you one day soon. Sally, Jeremy, 16 who has autism, Josh 18, Zachary 10

Thank your Mom for including the links to the VNS and to 4 Paws. I found them both interesting. Julie from Parkertown

Hi James, I was at the relay for life and seen you walking around. You won the 1st theme hour walk. You had your teddy bears and oushed them around the track. You was a real mood lifter when some of us older folks though we had to stop, there you were pushing your chair around. I have also seen the article that the newspaper did on you. I know that the wait time for you dog may seem long, but just like it takes you time to learn something new your dog has to learn new things to. I bet by the time you get you money all raised the perfect dog will be waiting just for you. One that loves to walk. Me and I thr girl will pull together a doantion for you.

James,
My nephew has autism and ACC, which means he is missing part of his brain. I know how much he struggles every day, and I wish there was something we could do to help him. But since there's nothing he can use right now, I thought he would appreciate me donating toward your dog. All I ask is that you pray for Hunter, and I will pray very hard for your mom and you and Runner...God bless you all!

I am so glad that you made this page. I know there are a lot of people who would love to help you get Runner. We just didn't know about it until now. I am glad that I was able to help out! You have raised a lot of money so far. Don't be discouraged! Runner will be yours before you know it. It will feel great to know how hard you worked to get him too! You can do it!

Dear James,
You did a very good job explaining why you need Runner, and how much Runner will help you every day. I hope this letter helps you raise lots of money - if I lived close to your family I would love to come to the spaghetti dinner!

Thank you to all who have posted and those who have made a pledge to James fundraising. James sit down everynight now after dinner and we read the comments to him.
In writing this story we asked James what he wanted ot tell people and wrot eit so other could understand. James is verbal, but understanding him at time is hard and putting together what he is trying to say with missing words is like working in a puzzle.
He is so excited about this page and cslls it "his fundraiser" Tonight he told us " I sposible for page, is my money project.
Again thanks for leaving you rpositive words! He gets out the travel map and looks to see where everyone is from. He does not understand how someone overseas can see his page, but thinks it is still cool.
Sincerely
Bob & Becky

I too have a child with Autism. We work very hard to make sure that she has the things she needs to succeed in life. You are very lucky to have a mom that works so tirelessly to help you acheive your goals. It is very admirable that you are taking an active role in your fundraising. I hope my daughter is able to help acheive her goals someday.

Hi James!
Good luck with the dog and everything else. I've got a 5 year old autistic daughter, and I find it tremendously reassuring to hear how upbeat you sound and all the things you are doing despite the challenges you've got to deal with. You sound like a fun kid and I wish you and your parents all the best!

James, you sound like a nice young man with a great attitude and fine sense of humor. (I'm 46 and still think *Farts* are funny.) I saw your story on a website named The Daily Kos. Most of us there are active in trying to make a better life possible for not only ourselves and our families, but families like yours too. I have made a small donation to help with your fundraiser. I hope many others see this and come to help you raise enough money to make Runner a part of your family. I am happy for you knowing that you will have a friend like Runner to help you with day to day activites, and that you will be able to have a little more independence!
Every teenage boy needs some time to himself once in awhile. Good luck to you my young friend, I wish you the best of luck!

Hi James
I read about you on a website called Daily Kos. I am so impressed by your courage and your desire to be "out there" and a part of the football team, as well as other activities. I sent a small donation your way for the assistance dog. I sure hope you are able to get one - both for the help and for the pure joy that dogs bring to your life! I have 2 dogs (andy and bob) and I love them dearly. Best of luck to you!

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I teach people how to become teachers and it's really hard for them to understand what it's like for people with ASD. Your story is really special because you wrote it and you were very honest about it. I hope you don't mind; I am going to link this to my blog so my students can read all about you.
I also wish the best of luck on getting your newest friend! I have three dogs, and while they are not assistance dogs, they take very good care of me.

Last time I left a comment I forgot to tell you where I live. I am northwest of Chicago, along the Wisconsin and Illinois border. There is quite a few towns along there, I'll let you guess whch one I'm in. I also wanted to tell you I wrote a little story about Assistance Animals, and in it I mentioned your need for a dog of your own.
Here is the link to the story. I hope you and your mom enjoy it, and that more people will come here to help Runner find his way home to you.

I read about your web page on The Daily Kos, and I was impressed by how hard you are working to get your assistance dog, Runner. Once you get your dog you will find that not only will he help you with your balance and people skills, but you will find that he will do a great job of attracting pretty girls as well! I wish you the best of luck with your upcoming operation - I hope that you can recover fast enough to go out trick-or-treating in October.

Hi James,
I have a service dog, too. She helps me get out of the house so I won't get so depressed. I trained her myself, and she goes everywhere with me. Not everybody can train their own dog, however, so I am glad to give you a little bit of money so you can have your service dog.

That's just a joke, James, I'm just a crazy cat lady, love my keekats!
I have some mobility problems too - don't have my own wheelchair, but use them whenever I go anyplace that requires a lot of walking. I mostly avoid place where you have to do much walking - like I hardly go into any stores at all. And I can't play basketball with my hubby anymore because of the pain I get when I'm on my feet for any length of time!
Hey, that's what you and I need to do, James - shoot some hoops together, we can share your chair, take turns sitting down and doing free throws while the other one runs around like a maniac trying to cause a foul. HAHAHA!
Good luck with your surgery - does NOT sound like fun, but then again, constipation is no fun either!
And GOOD LUCK with your fundraising efforts! GO GO GO!! GET THAT DOG!!

Hey James and family! I know in this day and age of immediate gratification that it is difficult to save money then buy something, but it makes it that much sweeter. I am confident that you will raise enough money to get Runner. Stay strong through your upcoming operation, and it won't be long before you'll be taking those classes with Runner. Take good care,

Your website was posted on three of my yahoogroups. Even if people can't contribute, I want to share your wonderful story with them. Believe it or not, a lot of teenagers don't have a clue how much their parents love them...I think it goes with the territory. It is very evident that you DO know this and that you truly appreciate them!!! You have something real special going on here...
Good Luck with raising the money needed for your your "newest" best friend. I hope and pray that "Runner" will soon be a wonderous part of your life!!!
Love to you and your family,

Hi, James. My name is Kathy and I have a grandson Ben, 6, who has autism, too. He has to have a special diet and he gets very overstimulated when he goes to school, so I homeschool him at my house. But he gets to go out a lot and go to interesting places and do things with small groups of kids. I have two Scotties and I used to have one that was trained as a hearing alert dog. Hope this works out for you.

By the way, we heard about you through Jill.

Dear James and Becky:
Hello. My name is Lauren Feingold. I live in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. I am honored to be a part of your effort to get your guide dog. So Thank you and thank you for sharing your story. Your journey and all of the strength, courage and determination it has taken you to get this far is very inspirational to me.
My daughter who is 5 years old has autism also, as well as a seizure disorder and sensory issues. She also has mobility and balance issues and wears afo braces. (thus she has a very similar diagnosis to you, James). The similarities do not end there. You see Reenie was adopted also, by me and her dad, when she was 7 months old from a place called Vladivostok, Russia. Like you, Reenie has amazing strength and determination and I am very proud of how far she has come. I would love to email with your mom directly, after you have returned home from your surgery. Perhaps I could learn from your journey and implement some of the strategies and therapies that have helped you, especially relating to the sensory issues.
In the meantime, I will be praying for you during your surgery and I am so happy for you that you will be getting your dog!!!
Love and light,

You are an inspiring young man. Keep up the good work, and give runner a pat on the head.
