Chesterfield County, SC animal shelter:

Please turn your speakers on & watch this video before continuing. We have received emails from people accusing us of making this up, photoshopping the still photos etc. NO, this is real. Now we've got the video up and you can see for yourselves. Please help us.

Update Tuesday Aug 26th: I spoke with Sheriff Sam Parker today. The shelter was put under him 3 weeks ago. He's been to the shelter, sees the problems and wants any & all help. This man is awesome, a true animal lover. A few of the things we discussed are:
1. Getting a 40' x 60" metal building to use as the shelter instead of the current building.
2. Logging in all pets so there's a record of all pets brought in.
3. Get ready for this one......getting rid of the current gas chamber and switching to lethal injection. The Sheriff is NOT opposed to this and just needs the drugs, any equipment and staff trained so it can be switched over.
4. The Sheriff estimates that he needs $25,000 - $30,000 for the metal building.
This is a great start and these changes can be done. Please keep spreading the word. Donations and supplies are needed and gratefully accepted.

Update Monday Aug 25th: We'd been contacted by PETA. They said they wanted to help. I spoke with their Shelter person, Jennifer Brown and told her what they could do to truly help Chesterfield. I told her NOT to stir up trouble but to help this county. Today I received this email from a volunteer at Chesterfield:
PETA has talked to animal control today, and wonders why these animals are not PUT DOWN after 5 days. They also told him that rescue groups are just another problem, moving FREE dogs pulled from shelters and moved up north to be adopted out. I was not aware that PETA wanted animals killed instead of saving them and giving them the chance for a home in another area of the country. That I found very disturbing.
I too find this very disturbing. So disturbing that I called Ms. Brown and told her among other things that if this is PETA's position then it's time they butt out. Chesterfield doesn't need this kind of "help".
Another thing --- I'm told that around 60 pets were pulled from Chesterfield over the weekend by rescue groups. Sorry to disappoint you, PETA.

Update Thurs Aug 21st: We have received a report today that other than the local volunteers who go in to feed, water and clean on the weekend, these animals are only being fed & watered on Wednesdays!! What about Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday? A volunteer from another rescue group went in yesterday and took out 7 dogs.

We are a group of volunteers trying to help rescue animals from a rural shelter in South Carolina. The pictures below speak for themselves. This is truly the worst shelter any of us have ever seen. Because of the lack of help and lack of funding it's fallen on volunteers to try to rescue as many dogs & cats from there as possible. Otherwise their fate is sealed.

The Animal Adoption League (AAL) is a 501c3 all volunteer organization based out of Rock Hill, SC and serving the greater Charlotte, NC area. Our web site is http://www.mynextpet.com

The following two pictures are of the dog "shelter".
Photobucket
Photobucket

This next one is of the cat house. What happens to them during a storm or snow?
Photobucket

Below are some of the pets we've taken so far from this shelter.

This is Ollie; a seven week old kitten who was rescued from the gates of hell only to then be diagnosed with Panleukopenia (some call it distemper). Panleukopenia (Panleuk for short) is very tough on kittens and Ollie only weighed 19 ounces when first weighed. Here's a shot of his sweet little face, very ill but at least he was opening his eyes & purring. Sadly, he only survived a few days after this picture was taken.

Photobucket

This shelter is in rural South Carolina. At this particular shelter puppies/dogs and kittens/cats that are no longer wanted are dropped off at the shelter and placed in a "drop box". A what, you ask? Well, a picture's worth a thousand words and here's where these animals find themselves:
Photobucket

This cruel, drop-off practice isn't just for cats. The dogs don't fare any better at this "shelter". You might be wondering where's the shade for the dogs? Where are the water bowls? We wondered that too.
Photobucket

There are no intake records, babies and adults are put in these drop pens with strange animals and it could be hours or even into the next day before a volunteer, prison inmate or animal control officer comes to take them and bring them "inside". I use the word "inside" loosely. It's block with plastic sheeting, no fans and a horrible smell. Things really only go from bad to worse because of the Parvo that the pups are at risk of catching and the Panleuk in the cats.

The reason Ollie was discovered at all is that a Animal Adoption League volunteer went to this particular shelter to save a Rottie that otherwise would have been killed. She brought her sister along. The sister went over to the cat cage and was horrified at what she saw. She said there were probably 100 cats & kittens and a couple were dead. She saw Ollie laying in a puddle of poo and thought he too was dead.....until he crawled to the edge of the cage and put his paw out to her. How do you walk away from that??? You don't. She took Ollie home.

By the following evening it was clear that Ollie was in trouble. It turned out that the heavy infestation of fleas, ear mites and tape worms literally crawling out & then back into of him weren't the worst of his problems. Ollie had Panleukopenia. He lived four more days and his vet bill is around $500. We will pay it.

Remember the Rottie that I mentioned above? Today we found out she has a heavy case of Heartworm. The vet said she'll remove the buckshot from her body too. The estimate for her Heartworm treatment is $400. Somehow this will be done.

Photobucket

Then there's Duffy, a four month old Beagle puppy that was rescued from that shelter yesterday. Today she was at the vet and diagnosed with "hemorragic enteritis". Basically that means, bloody stools. Is Parvo on the way? We don't know but fluids were given and the pup started on antibiotics.
Photobucket

Remember the haunting picture at the very top of the page, under the title of this fund? It's of a sad looking puppy sitting next to chain link fencing. He or she is one of the ones that hasn't been rescued yet. At this particular "shelter" they put at least 40 animals per week into this:
Photobucket
It's a gas chamber and used every Friday. Sadly, gas chambers are far too common in the rural South.

I've purposely left off the name of the shelter and county that it's located in. We're afraid the local gov will stop all volunteers from going in if any heat is put on them. At this point we have two choices: stop taking pets from there because financially it's putting a drain on our group's bank account OR ask the animal loving community for help. So, we're asking you. Every $10 will add up and will enable us to help those that truly need it the most; the puppies, kittens, dogs and cats of this shelter.

FYI: Some people will want an explanation on what a "pledge" is. When you pledge an amount it's not taken from your Paypal account or credit card UNTIL the fund goal is met. I donated myself so I could see how this works. Basically, your pledge is put on hold but not taken until the fund goal is met. If we don't meet the goal, mission failed; no money taken from anyone.
♥Please help us meet our goal. All pledges add up!

August 5th. Every word posted above is true and the photos are real; the animals ARE suffering. I wish it weren't true. We thought that by posting this on various outlets across the country that people would quickly help. Some have but not to the degree I was hoping for. The reason the response hasn't been greater is that the story of this shelter is so outrageous that some people don't even believe it. I'm hoping that someone will get this fundable to Oprah or Geraldo and that they'll contact me.

Thank you for what you are doing...what mankind does to animals is truly disgusting and beyond comprehension.

Count me in on this!

Posted by Anonymous User at 2008-07-31 22:58
Please do what you can to help these animals and the shelter!! I'm happy to donate for this cause. Great idea and thank you for taking the time to pass the word around and ask for help. If only animals could talk and ask for help, ask to stop the abuse, and ask to stop the pain and suffering, if only this could be true...maybe then humans would start to treat these incredible creatures with love and kindness. Until then, it is up to those of us who care to help them. Thank you for all that you are doing!

call peta

Posted by Anonymous User at 2008-08-01 13:15
You should seriously think about calling PETA. They deal with this kind of nightmere all the time, and they can put an end to it. This shouldn't go on for a nother minute. If a shelter can't properly take care of their animals then they shouldn't be a shelter it just makes things worse. www.peta.org

What Happy Looking Cat???

Posted by Anonymous User at 2008-08-05 23:03
In response to the one comment to this fundable which said something about the happy looking cat, that cat was very sick and died shortly after that photo was taken despite all efforts to save him. While it is true that this shelter is not representative of the whole South and similar situations can be found in other parts of the country, this shelter is real and those photos were not thrown together with a photoshop. If you check with the Animal Adoption League you will find this is a legitimate plea and every cent of the money raised will go toward helping this shelter and as many of the cats and dogs as possible which end up there.

To another comment, the reason the area and name are not mentioned is because while certain areas of the south may be sophiticated and reasonable many people in this particular area are not, and the volunteers and organizations which are trying to help do not wish to be banned from the shelter by the local authorities who are supposed to be in charge of this shelter...

I'm originally from the West Coast and probably would not have believed this either...but now I live in the southern part of North Carolina, just over the state line from where this shelter is located, and now I not only believe it but I've seen it.

Sadly, this IS legitimate and we DO need your help

Posted by Anonymous User at 2008-08-06 13:56
I wish it wasn't so, but it's a reality in rural South Carolina that animals are treated this way. The pictures are NOT Photoshopped or altered in any way except to be resized to use on the web. I have added the link from our website, www.mynextpet.com to this page so you know it is sponsored by a legitimate non-profit rescue group, Animal Adoption League.

Please don't insult us or the animals anymore by insinuating this is a fake. We need your help. If this fundable fails, we all have failed.

I have worked for years with Animal Adoption League and am a employee of the Locust Animal Clinic, Locust, NC. This is a great group of people that works incredibly long hours without pay, spending a fortune in their own money and I cannot begin to even keep up with these women! We believe strongly in their work ethic - to spay/neuter, vaccinate, treat for heartworm, and place in homes (that have been reveiwed)for the safe healthy & happy future of each pet they recover. I have a lot of wonderful stories of placements I have been involved in with AAL and some very sad stories of pets that we got to too late. I cannot speak highly enough of President Karen Hjerpe and the person running this pledge, Beth Kelly. IF YOU THINK THIS IS A SCAM, CHECK YOUR FACTS FIRST, THEN YOU CAN HAVE AN OPINION. THINK FIRST, THEN SPEAK.

I do not know what people have said that your cause is a scam I had the same problem after my dog was attacked I was trying to raise donations for his vet care sending them to my local vet office. These people spread the word that I was a scam, drug addict called the local police and harrassed my vet to the point that all donations had to be returned and my dog was unable to get the care he needed! One person said I was such an elaborate scammer that I had a fake receptionist answer the phone at the number my vet was listed in the phone book under! The people who say these things clearly have no life and need to leave people alone. Our purpose as rescues and fellow animal is SUPPOSED to be to help one other not ATTACK one another I think that some people have lost sight of this fact! I hope you are able to get up enough funds to help these animals in this shelter I seen this and it made me cry those poor babies! How can anyone try to prevent them from being saved? God Bless you and the time that you give to these animals just ignore the negative BS and keep on doing what you are doing!!!!

Has anyone contacted Best Friends Animal Society?

For anyone who believes this is fake...

Posted by Anonymous User at 2008-08-08 09:24
...I would encourage you to visit an animal shelter in a rural area of your state. Unfortunately, if you live anywhere in the south, what you will see will horrify you. The buildings (if there are any) are cinder block and likely have no heat or air conditioning. Most of the "workers" there will in reality be inmates assigned to be there...sometimes you get lucky and find one that is an animal lover, but sometimes you find ones that take pleasure in torturing the animals. Dogs and cats are housed at a minimum of 2-3 animals per kennel. Many are housed in outdoor kennels with no shade and water given only twice per day-morning and evening. In their haste to try and get some human attention, the dogs will often knock over their water bowl before they even drink any and no one replaces it until the next 'scheduled' time which can be hours later. As far as cleaning goes, if you're lucky, their kennels are hosed down once a day....unfortunately usually with the dogs still in them. Most dogs that are rescued have a horrible fear of hoses and water in general. Most of these animals don't stand a chance of being adopted, as the shelters are in the middle of no where and do not have humane societies, local rescue groups or adoption events at the local Petsmart, because there isn't a Petsmart within 50 miles. Dogs are gassed here in the south...and if you don't believe that or don't know what that means, I would encourage you to google it and watch one of the many graphic videos online. I guarantee it will not be something you forget soon.

I understand that the conditions described on this site are unfathomable to most people. I was one of them... until I moved to upstate SC and became involved with a local rescue group. Much like these volunteers, a friend went to the shelter in Darlington SC to rescue a dog and was horrified at what she saw. A few days later, my husband who is a photographer and I drove 2 hours to the shelter to take photos of some very adoptable dogs that were there in an effort to try and get the word out and save as many as we could and to save a second dog immediately. We spent 3 hours there taking photos and just giving the animals some attention. The dogs were matted, malnourished, covered in fleas and ticks and filthy. In one small building, there were cats (some with kittens) in carriers stacked floor to ceiling along every available inch of wall space. We saw a puppy with it's stomach so bloated with worms that it could barely walk and a gorgeous yellow lab that wouldn't put weight on one rear leg. There were huskies in outdoor kennels with no shade/water in the 98 degree heat. I could not believe or process what my eyes were seeing here - I'm a city kid from the Midwest and had been around animals all my life, but I had never even heard of anything like this. About an hour into our time there, my husband looked at me and uttered "we are in hell" and that pretty much summed it up. If I had allowed myself to really stop and process what I was seeing I would have broken down into tears, but we had to focus and do whatever we could to save as many of them as possible. We took photos of about 40 dogs that day, poured through half completed documents trying to get ages, weights, etc on them and spent the last hour there filling water bowls, petting heads, tending to wounds, and whatever else we could do to make the conditions a little better.

That day, we took Angel, a gorgeous Shepherd that was so thin you could literally see every bone in her body, out of there with us. Ultimately, between two different rescue groups, 30+ dogs were saved, put into foster homes, nursed back to health, and finally adopted into loving forever homes. We could not have done any of that with the generous support of the general public. We made flyers, emailed everyone that we knew, sent general pleas out through rescue email lists, you name it. We raised over $3,000 to pay for the medical bills of the dogs that were pulled. The puppy with the bloated belly was de-wormed and adopted to a family with small children. The lab with the limp became our foster dog and we would learn that she had been laying on the floor of a concrete kennel with a fractured pelvis. Many months, 2 surgeries and lots of rehab later, Daphne is now the constant companion of an interior designer in Charleston, SC.

If you happen to be fortunate enough to live in a part of this country where the condition of animal shelters and the care of the animals there meets the SPCA standards, consider yourself lucky. And, before you dismiss the information here as a 'hoax' or a fake, get on a plane or in your car and come to Charlotte, NC and spend a day with someone from the AAL and see for youself what they and other rescue groups in the south deal with every day. I would be happy to personally escourt you to any one of the shelters within a 50 mile radius of this city and show you first hand the conditions here. I guarantee that what you see here on this site is just the tip of the iceburg. None of the photos here even come close to showing the condition of the animals in these shelters, but, to be honest, most people wouldn't want to see those photos and if those were posted, you'd probably be the first one blogging that those were photoshopped too. As a rescuer, the most important thing that I've learned is that 95% of the population is unaware and uneducated as to what really goes on in their local shelter. All I ask, is that you get the facts and get a true understanding of the conditions before you pass judgement.

I am shocked to know this is going on. Why isn't the local government doing anything to stop it??? Its great to see someone taking a stand to help these animals. For the beagle give her gatorade, oatmeal baby food and yogurt. Yogurt is the best thing to give her and I promise she will make a full recovery. My baby did and he was virge of death.

Good luck!

Please believe the images you see on your screen! This shelter is operated by the state, but they have no funding, and the only help these animals have is provided by volunteers and local rescues that have the funds and foster homes to take some of these animals in to foster care long term. The pictures here may be horrifying, but they are by far not the worst...If the animals survive the "drop-off box" they go into kennel runs, or for the cats, a giant wooden box that serves as a "cat house"...the dogs are sometimes housed as many as 20 in a 10x10 pen. The cat house is enclosed with chicken wire;the holes are large enough for the kittens to walk right through, and many have wandered into the dog enclosure with disasterous results.
I know this because I am a volunteer for a national rescue, and was called to see if we could take two dogs from this place last year. We had the foster homes available for the dogs, and I went down to get them. The kennel pens for the dogs( there are 8)are exposed on all sides to the weather. One giant galvanized tub for water; the dogs are fed out of another giant tub,so whoever is the strongest gets to eat the most. The kennels are hosed down twice a day to dispose of feces...they are hosed down WITH THE DOGS STILL IN THEM. Not only are parasites passed on from dog to dog, as well as the danger of infectious disease, but some of the dogs that I saw had open wounds from dog fights simply due to overcrowding.

I took those two sad boys home, and our rescue had both treated for flea infestation, tick bites and all the intestional parasites you can name. We also had to treat them for heartworm disease. In addtion, one boy had to be treated for sarcoptic mange, a very contagious condition that he probably got through contact with another dog at this shelter, or had when he came in, and passed on to every other dog he had contact with there.

As sad as this pictures are, the volunteers there are trying to HELP these animals, and are courageous enough to go every day, and to contact rescues to try to get the individual animals to safety, so there is at least some small chance for them. Want to be angry? Direct your ire to the "owners" of these poor animals that have neglected their responsibilities for years, and then dump their guilt in the drop box and drive away.

If you can help, please do!

THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO BE MADE AWARE!

Posted by Anonymous User at 2008-08-14 09:27
This is all true...these poor animals are GASSED in these shelters..it is the most inhumane thing and a SIN AND A SHAME TO MANKIND!!!! Animals cannot speak and there are kind hearted people in this world that are trying to speak for them. I have a petition out to stop gassing animals! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/petition/985406651 ~ please visit this link and sign this petition and please make a $10 dollar donation or more if you can to this site. Ten dollars is one stop at McD's or Dunk's... and it is worth One Million to the dog in the cage ready to be gassed. I just rescued a Boston Terrier from a kill shelter this week! He is the most loving dog with the biggest brownest THANKFUL eyes that I have ever seen and a minute has gone by that he lets me know he is thankful for being with me. These kill shelters have to be stopped! PLEASE DO YOUR PART AND HELP! PLEASE DONATE SO THE SHELTERS CAN CONTINUE TO PULL FROM THESE PLACES....THEY ARE A LIVING HELL FOR ANIMALS AND THEY NEED TO BE STOPPED. THIS IS ALL TRUE PEOPLE THESE PLACES ARE OUT THERE AND THESE NO KILL SHELTERS NEED YOUR HELP!! THE DOGS NEED YOUR HELP. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DONATE AND GOD BLESS FOR HELPING!!!

Where is the government?

Posted by Anonymous User at 2008-08-20 10:12
Why has the State of South Carolina not addressed the conditions of this "shelter" through the Dept. of Agriculture? According to the law, shouldn't all humane organizations and rescue groups be licensed and inspected in order to prevent the spread of disease and ensure humane treatment? Perhaps the donations and help from concerned individuals should be applied to setting up an alternate shelter and shutting this one down.

Please contact the ASPCA

Posted by Anonymous User at 2008-08-21 10:13
Please call the ASPCA if you have not already. They must now about these types of shelters to help the animals out. Once contacted they will also monitor the shelter there on after.
You are an "angle" to be working so hard to help these poor animals. Good luck!!!!

Hello,

I'm so glad to see that you've reached your goal and happy to have helped make it happen.

One small administrative request: will the Animal Adoption League be providing receipts of these donations for tax reporting purposes? Please let me know if there is a particular person I should contact in order to request a tax receipt.

Thank you!

GET Peta out of the picture fast

Posted by Anonymous User at 2008-08-25 23:35
I can't stand peta their vice president i beleive it is has diabetes but she uses insulin which of course a animal byproduct but yet you aren't suppose to drink milk or have cheese etc. Not to mention all the animal testing that goes in research for diabetes medicines etc. So where does she think that comes from & don't even get me started on the president. ARGGGH Peta does not & i repeate DOES NOT advocate pet ownership.

Good luck im praying for all the animals & the people who are brave enough to pull the animals & take care of them.
