Please turn your speakers on & watch this video before continuing. We have received emails from people accusing us of making this up, photoshopping the still photos etc. NO, this is real. Now we've got the video up and you can see for yourselves. Please help us.
Update Tuesday Aug 26th: I spoke with Sheriff Sam Parker today. The shelter was put under him 3 weeks ago. He's been to the shelter, sees the problems and wants any & all help. This man is awesome, a true animal lover. A few of the things we discussed are:
Update Monday Aug 25th: We'd been contacted by PETA. They said they wanted to help. I spoke with their Shelter person, Jennifer Brown and told her what they could do to truly help Chesterfield. I told her NOT to stir up trouble but to help this county. Today I received this email from a volunteer at Chesterfield:
Update Thurs Aug 21st: We have received a report today that other than the local volunteers who go in to feed, water and clean on the weekend, these animals are only being fed & watered on Wednesdays!! What about Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday? A volunteer from another rescue group went in yesterday and took out 7 dogs.
We are a group of volunteers trying to help rescue animals from a rural shelter in South Carolina. The pictures below speak for themselves. This is truly the worst shelter any of us have ever seen. Because of the lack of help and lack of funding it's fallen on volunteers to try to rescue as many dogs & cats from there as possible. Otherwise their fate is sealed.
The Animal Adoption League (AAL) is a 501c3 all volunteer organization based out of Rock Hill, SC and serving the greater Charlotte, NC area. Our web site is http://www.mynextpet.com
The following two pictures are of the dog "shelter".
This next one is of the cat house. What happens to them during a storm or snow?
Below are some of the pets we've taken so far from this shelter.
This is Ollie; a seven week old kitten who was rescued from the gates of hell only to then be diagnosed with Panleukopenia (some call it distemper). Panleukopenia (Panleuk for short) is very tough on kittens and Ollie only weighed 19 ounces when first weighed. Here's a shot of his sweet little face, very ill but at least he was opening his eyes & purring. Sadly, he only survived a few days after this picture was taken.
This shelter is in rural South Carolina. At this particular shelter puppies/dogs and kittens/cats that are no longer wanted are dropped off at the shelter and placed in a "drop box". A what, you ask? Well, a picture's worth a thousand words and here's where these animals find themselves:
This cruel, drop-off practice isn't just for cats. The dogs don't fare any better at this "shelter". You might be wondering where's the shade for the dogs? Where are the water bowls? We wondered that too.
There are no intake records, babies and adults are put in these drop pens with strange animals and it could be hours or even into the next day before a volunteer, prison inmate or animal control officer comes to take them and bring them "inside". I use the word "inside" loosely. It's block with plastic sheeting, no fans and a horrible smell. Things really only go from bad to worse because of the Parvo that the pups are at risk of catching and the Panleuk in the cats.
The reason Ollie was discovered at all is that a Animal Adoption League volunteer went to this particular shelter to save a Rottie that otherwise would have been killed. She brought her sister along. The sister went over to the cat cage and was horrified at what she saw. She said there were probably 100 cats & kittens and a couple were dead. She saw Ollie laying in a puddle of poo and thought he too was dead.....until he crawled to the edge of the cage and put his paw out to her. How do you walk away from that??? You don't. She took Ollie home.
By the following evening it was clear that Ollie was in trouble. It turned out that the heavy infestation of fleas, ear mites and tape worms literally crawling out & then back into of him weren't the worst of his problems. Ollie had Panleukopenia. He lived four more days and his vet bill is around $500. We will pay it.
Remember the Rottie that I mentioned above? Today we found out she has a heavy case of Heartworm. The vet said she'll remove the buckshot from her body too. The estimate for her Heartworm treatment is $400. Somehow this will be done.
Remember the haunting picture at the very top of the page, under the title of this fund? It's of a sad looking puppy sitting next to chain link fencing. He or she is one of the ones that hasn't been rescued yet. At this particular "shelter" they put at least 40 animals per week into this:
I've purposely left off the name of the shelter and county that it's located in. We're afraid the local gov will stop all volunteers from going in if any heat is put on them. At this point we have two choices: stop taking pets from there because financially it's putting a drain on our group's bank account OR ask the animal loving community for help. So, we're asking you. Every $10 will add up and will enable us to help those that truly need it the most; the puppies, kittens, dogs and cats of this shelter.
FYI: Some people will want an explanation on what a "pledge" is. When you pledge an amount it's not taken from your Paypal account or credit card UNTIL the fund goal is met. I donated myself so I could see how this works. Basically, your pledge is put on hold but not taken until the fund goal is met. If we don't meet the goal, mission failed; no money taken from anyone.
August 5th. Every word posted above is true and the photos are real; the animals ARE suffering. I wish it weren't true. We thought that by posting this on various outlets across the country that people would quickly help. Some have but not to the degree I was hoping for. The reason the response hasn't been greater is that the story of this shelter is so outrageous that some people don't even believe it. I'm hoping that someone will get this fundable to Oprah or Geraldo and that they'll contact me.
1. Getting a 40' x 60" metal building to use as the shelter instead of the current building.
2. Logging in all pets so there's a record of all pets brought in.
3. Get ready for this one......getting rid of the current gas chamber and switching to lethal injection. The Sheriff is NOT opposed to this and just needs the drugs, any equipment and staff trained so it can be switched over.
4. The Sheriff estimates that he needs $25,000 - $30,000 for the metal building.
This is a great start and these changes can be done. Please keep spreading the word. Donations and supplies are needed and gratefully accepted.
PETA has talked to animal control today, and wonders why these animals are not PUT DOWN after 5 days. They also told him that rescue groups are just another problem, moving FREE dogs pulled from shelters and moved up north to be adopted out. I was not aware that PETA wanted animals killed instead of saving them and giving them the chance for a home in another area of the country. That I found very disturbing.
I too find this very disturbing. So disturbing that I called Ms. Brown and told her among other things that if this is PETA's position then it's time they butt out. Chesterfield doesn't need this kind of "help".
Another thing --- I'm told that around 60 pets were pulled from Chesterfield over the weekend by rescue groups. Sorry to disappoint you, PETA.

Then there's Duffy, a four month old Beagle puppy that was rescued from that shelter yesterday. Today she was at the vet and diagnosed with "hemorragic enteritis". Basically that means, bloody stools. Is Parvo on the way? We don't know but fluids were given and the pup started on antibiotics.

It's a gas chamber and used every Friday. Sadly, gas chambers are far too common in the rural South.
♥Please help us meet our goal. All pledges add up!

What Happy Looking Cat???
To another comment, the reason the area and name are not mentioned is because while certain areas of the south may be sophiticated and reasonable many people in this particular area are not, and the volunteers and organizations which are trying to help do not wish to be banned from the shelter by the local authorities who are supposed to be in charge of this shelter...
I'm originally from the West Coast and probably would not have believed this either...but now I live in the southern part of North Carolina, just over the state line from where this shelter is located, and now I not only believe it but I've seen it.
Sadly, this IS legitimate and we DO need your help
Please don't insult us or the animals anymore by insinuating this is a fake. We need your help. If this fundable fails, we all have failed.

For anyone who believes this is fake...
I understand that the conditions described on this site are unfathomable to most people. I was one of them... until I moved to upstate SC and became involved with a local rescue group. Much like these volunteers, a friend went to the shelter in Darlington SC to rescue a dog and was horrified at what she saw. A few days later, my husband who is a photographer and I drove 2 hours to the shelter to take photos of some very adoptable dogs that were there in an effort to try and get the word out and save as many as we could and to save a second dog immediately. We spent 3 hours there taking photos and just giving the animals some attention. The dogs were matted, malnourished, covered in fleas and ticks and filthy. In one small building, there were cats (some with kittens) in carriers stacked floor to ceiling along every available inch of wall space. We saw a puppy with it's stomach so bloated with worms that it could barely walk and a gorgeous yellow lab that wouldn't put weight on one rear leg. There were huskies in outdoor kennels with no shade/water in the 98 degree heat. I could not believe or process what my eyes were seeing here - I'm a city kid from the Midwest and had been around animals all my life, but I had never even heard of anything like this. About an hour into our time there, my husband looked at me and uttered "we are in hell" and that pretty much summed it up. If I had allowed myself to really stop and process what I was seeing I would have broken down into tears, but we had to focus and do whatever we could to save as many of them as possible. We took photos of about 40 dogs that day, poured through half completed documents trying to get ages, weights, etc on them and spent the last hour there filling water bowls, petting heads, tending to wounds, and whatever else we could do to make the conditions a little better.
That day, we took Angel, a gorgeous Shepherd that was so thin you could literally see every bone in her body, out of there with us. Ultimately, between two different rescue groups, 30+ dogs were saved, put into foster homes, nursed back to health, and finally adopted into loving forever homes. We could not have done any of that with the generous support of the general public. We made flyers, emailed everyone that we knew, sent general pleas out through rescue email lists, you name it. We raised over $3,000 to pay for the medical bills of the dogs that were pulled. The puppy with the bloated belly was de-wormed and adopted to a family with small children. The lab with the limp became our foster dog and we would learn that she had been laying on the floor of a concrete kennel with a fractured pelvis. Many months, 2 surgeries and lots of rehab later, Daphne is now the constant companion of an interior designer in Charleston, SC.
If you happen to be fortunate enough to live in a part of this country where the condition of animal shelters and the care of the animals there meets the SPCA standards, consider yourself lucky. And, before you dismiss the information here as a 'hoax' or a fake, get on a plane or in your car and come to Charlotte, NC and spend a day with someone from the AAL and see for youself what they and other rescue groups in the south deal with every day. I would be happy to personally escourt you to any one of the shelters within a 50 mile radius of this city and show you first hand the conditions here. I guarantee that what you see here on this site is just the tip of the iceburg. None of the photos here even come close to showing the condition of the animals in these shelters, but, to be honest, most people wouldn't want to see those photos and if those were posted, you'd probably be the first one blogging that those were photoshopped too. As a rescuer, the most important thing that I've learned is that 95% of the population is unaware and uneducated as to what really goes on in their local shelter. All I ask, is that you get the facts and get a true understanding of the conditions before you pass judgement.

I know this because I am a volunteer for a national rescue, and was called to see if we could take two dogs from this place last year. We had the foster homes available for the dogs, and I went down to get them. The kennel pens for the dogs( there are 8)are exposed on all sides to the weather. One giant galvanized tub for water; the dogs are fed out of another giant tub,so whoever is the strongest gets to eat the most. The kennels are hosed down twice a day to dispose of feces...they are hosed down WITH THE DOGS STILL IN THEM. Not only are parasites passed on from dog to dog, as well as the danger of infectious disease, but some of the dogs that I saw had open wounds from dog fights simply due to overcrowding.
I took those two sad boys home, and our rescue had both treated for flea infestation, tick bites and all the intestional parasites you can name. We also had to treat them for heartworm disease. In addtion, one boy had to be treated for sarcoptic mange, a very contagious condition that he probably got through contact with another dog at this shelter, or had when he came in, and passed on to every other dog he had contact with there.
As sad as this pictures are, the volunteers there are trying to HELP these animals, and are courageous enough to go every day, and to contact rescues to try to get the individual animals to safety, so there is at least some small chance for them. Want to be angry? Direct your ire to the "owners" of these poor animals that have neglected their responsibilities for years, and then dump their guilt in the drop box and drive away.
If you can help, please do!
THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO BE MADE AWARE!

PETA is requesting information
Tax receipts
I'm so glad to see that you've reached your goal and happy to have helped make it happen.
One small administrative request: will the Animal Adoption League be providing receipts of these donations for tax reporting purposes? Please let me know if there is a particular person I should contact in order to request a tax receipt.
Thank you!

If you'd like a receipt for your taxes
Give your name & mailing address so we can send you the tax receipt. Please include the email address you used when you donated. That's how we verify the amount for the receipt.
To all who have helped: THANK YOU.
To which shelter is this money going?
With so many e-mails that I received, I would like to know to which shelter is the money going. Is it Paws and Claws.
Thank you,
Alexandra
