Quick Pitch

National Prep Race is the only mud run in the country that "preps" competitors for longer, more challenging mud races. We offer an opportunity for people who want to compete in mud runs but aren't sure if they're ready to handle the bigger races like Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, and Warrior Dash.  For a sneak peak at one of our races, check out these race highlights.

Key Features

Mud Runs have become extremely popular within the last few years, with the bigger races often drawing 6,000-10,000 people per race. However, most of these races are long (6-12 miles) and can take 3 to 8 hours to complete. There's a large segment of people out there who want to participate but aren't sure if they're physically or mentally up to the task. Our race is only 2 miles and takes most competitors less than 40 minutes to finish. We feature 5 obstacles which, while challenging, are not as difficult as what you'll find at the bigger races and can be done by almost anyone. Our race is unique in that as of now it's the only lower intensity, shorter duration mud run in the country. In being a "lead in" race we're not in direct competition with big companies and will actually benefit from their success.

Rewards

All rewards include discounted or free registration. Our race t-shirts come in four different sizes and include the National Prep Race logo with all our local sponsors. Our race highlight video features clips from all race day activity: the mud race, mini mudders (children's event), & interviews. We make sure our highlight video always includes footage of the participants who buy it. We will email you a discount code which you can then use to register online. Race bibs and t-shirt can be picked up on race day. Highlight videos will be mailed approximately 2-3 weeks after the event.

Traction and Funding Needs

Even without dedicating resources to marketing and outreach, we saw an 80% increase in participation in our New Jersey location from 2011-2012. Equally encouraging is that in addition to our new runners we retained many of the participants from the previous year's race. Given the increase we saw in New Jersey last year we fully expect that in 2013 we will be able to double 2012 totals in all three of our locations (NJ, PA, MA). We're looking to raise money to increase the awareness of our races and allow more people to take advantage of our race model as they strive towards the larger, more demanding races.

About the Business and Team

Early in 2011, Brad Vaccaro, owner of the Sports Conditioning Institute in NJ, became familiar with some of the larger mud runs in the Northeast and immeditely saw the business potential in this increasingly popular type of race. In March 2011, he set out to establish his own race but needed a way to set his apart so he wasn't competing with the well-funded, more established companies like Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, and Warrior Dash.  Brad's idea was to create the same race on a smaller scale, thus giving an opportunity for less experienced runners to compete and providing a "prep race" for anyone who might want to eventually challenge themselves in the bigger events. His plans were for a 2 mile race which would feature five obstacles (wall, balance beams, tubes, tires and mud pit) and take most runners less than 40 minutes to complete.

He immediately brought in Adam Zajicek to be a part owner of the company. Adam is a mud run enthusiast who has competed in all the different major mud runs and constantly offers new ideas on how to improve our race. Kyle Murphy, who had worked previously with Brad at the Sports Conditioning Institute, was named Operations Coordinator and now oversees all race day activities. Ryan Van Alstine, who had also worked at the Sports Conditioning Institute, was named Marketing Director.  Video Coordinator Francisco Munez is also on board to record, edit and mail out all race day media.
