What we are building

People envision electric vehicles in general as expensive, complicated and of little use due to limited range and the lack of repair centers available. We at Ethos Electric Motorcycles are out to change that perception, and we have succeeded with the design we are presenting to you here and now.

Our design utilizes electric vehicle components that have been designed by people that live and breathe electric vehicles and offer their controller and battery charging designs as open source for all to share. These components have been tried, tested utilized by the electric vehicle community for years, so we do not have to invest excess money into design, development and testing of proprietary systems technologies which allows us to keep our end cost low. Another positive side to utilizing open source is that upgrades can either be downloaded by you from us or if you have the savvy, you can modify your system however you the owner like. Unlike gas engined motorcycles that have to constantly evolve their engines to increase range and performance. To increase perormance in an electric motorcycle, one simply adjusts the program in the motor controller and upgrades batteries. All components are self diagnosing and repair involves simply unmounting an errant part, disengaging it from the electrical connector and replacing it with new. Parts  installation is  simply the reverse of removal and the design allows for the owner to perform any service. Computer modeling shows a range of 150 miles at continous speed of 65 mph with occassional bursts of speed of up to 85 mph for  passing purposes. The battery pack we utilize is made up of Lithium Titanate, this battery chemistry has a high energy density and is not suscepetible to overheating like earlier Lithium batteries have occassionally experienced. Battery pack recharge is by either a 20 amp 120 volt residential outlet or 40 amp 240 volt outlet (like a dryer outlet) at either 50 hz (overseas) or 60 hz battery pack recharge time to 90% full is 60 minutes, just enough time to enjoy lunch or dinner and be back on the road.

Another positive aspect in our business paradigm is our committment to reducing our carbon footprint. People who are not advocates of electric vehicles whine about how they still use natural resources and they are not as efficient as we make out. In order to minimize our footprint, our construction paradigm is focused on utilizing both wind and solar energy to power our construction area for these motorcycles and we utilize recycled materials when possible and where it makes sense.

What makes our design so special

To begin with, the overall look, It's a sexy motorcycle, its uncluttered by the myriad parts that are needed by a gas engined bike to operate. It's unusual and futuristic looks are utilitarian, yet they are refreshing and pleasing to the eye. The chassis is light yet sturdy, built out of 1/4" T-6061 aircraft grade aluminum with an aluminum honeycomb infrastructure wrapped with carbon fiber for looks. Failure analysis shows that it will hold its own against any standard tubular frame on the market.

The drive system is just as simple and elegant as the chassis in a geeky sort of way. We use a motorcycle twist grip throttle operating an electrical motor controller providing low voltage electricty (96 volts DC) from the battery pack to 20Kw hub motor which is a removable part of the carbon fiber rear wheel and there you have it, simple, elegant, attractive

Our battery pack is a nano based lithium titanate design developed by Toshiba it has a 6000 cycle recharge / discharge lifetime which give the batteries a lifecycle of 16 years if recharged every day. The battery chemistry allows recharge times of approximately 60 minutes to 90% charge. According to calculations from toshiba utilizing our specifications, we have a range of approximately 150 miles on a charge at a speed of 65 miles per hour with bursts of speed to 85 for passing. Imagine that, almost two hours of riding and then recharge during a casual lunch or dinner and be back on the road.

Our concession to specialty items begins and ends with the custom carbon fiber wheels. We chose them for both their looks and their weight savings as well as their durability.

Instead of utilizing the standard halogen lighting, we are using LED lighting in a two light system. One is a wide angle reflecting design to illuminate the roadway to the side of the motorcycle and the second one is a projector light to illuminate distance. The turn signals and tailight are integral to the aluminum frame and therefore the risk of being torn off during a crash are greatly minimized.

The history of the design

Miiko Mahonen had a vision, Miiko wanted an electric motorcycle that was different from any other motorcycle and this is his vision. We at Ethos Electric Motorcycles came across it and realized this is exactly what we want as a statement piece to let everyone know where Ethos Electric Motorcycles will go. After securing permission to use the design, our next step was to utilize our Solidworks design program to make it feasible as a real world motorcycle. We are pleased to say that we have brought it one step nearer to the real world as an actual electric motorcycle and this is the reason for our participation with Fundable

Where is your contribution going

The funding you our supporters pledge is earmarked for the following:

1) Construction of the frame jigs required for building the frames.

2) Materials for construction of prototypes.

3) Construction of six prototypes utilized for testing, advertising and one will be raffled off to raise more funding.

4) Television, internet and written advertising.

Who is Ethos Electric Motorcycles

Ethos Electric motorcycles is a group of people that take a great deal of joy in motorcycles and believe in alternative energy vehicles as a way of doing what they can to reduce pollution. We decided to combine these passions and create a work of technological work of art that can be utilized for transportation and actually have a job that we enjoy. We are:

Jim Berry - (Chief battery placer) 30 year history in the electrical field. Owned and operated Rolling Thunder Raceworks specializing in the construction and support of SCCA based race vehicles. Building electric vehicle conversion for 10 years.

Sandy Berry - (She who keeps all of us from doing truly stupid stuff) Attorney at law for 15 years.

Ethan Berry - (Solidworks guru) Brings drawings to reality and weilds a mean wrench

Miika Mahonen - (visionary extraordinaire) Strategin design consultant with degrees in Art and Design and the ability to think of way cool designs and put them into a design.

Why we need your funding

Like a multitude of other people, we at Ethos Electric Motorcycles have a dream. Obviously our dream has to do with a bit of ego in as much as we would like to see our company succeed and electric motorcycles that we build with our own hands, hearts and brains driven down the road.

But a secondary and and no less important part of the equation is that we are doing this because we believe that every fossil fuel burning vehicle taken out of the loop is one more step towards reducing pollution, reducing our carbon footprint, reducing our overall cost of personal transportation and if you believe in global warming, it's one more step to reversing that trend.
