Welcome to a world where we can all breathe easier.

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), asthma and airborne allergies affect over 20% of the world’s population. Sufferers have had to live in fear of attacks that occur without warning, and they’ve had no quick and easy way to know what exactly triggers their respiratory problems or how they might avoid future attacks.

Airborne contaminants are usually invisible to the naked eye and therefore attack unannounced. Well, we’re here to make the announcement.

Yes: AlerSense™ detects threats before attacks happen, and learns how to better protect people by scanning for the contaminants that cause problems.

One in five people in the U.S. has either either allergy or asthma symptoms. Seasonal allergies wreak havoc year after year. Parents of the 6.3 million U.S. children with asthma stay up at night, constantly worried about another unexpected attack sending their child to the hospital yet again.

Inhalers, allergy medicines, oxygen… Such treatments help manage symptoms, but, when you’re struggling to breathe, help has already arrived late.

That’s why AlerSense™ monitors the air of your home environment 24/7. Even when you’re not around, the system scans continuously for contaminants and can alert the family via mobile app as changes occur. By identifying dangers early on (for example, pollens, dust, animal dander, molds and chemicals), it’s possible to mitigate if not entirely avoid attacks.

What makes this system so great? It’s smart. Very smart.

Here’s a quick look at how the system works:

  • A Particle Sensor counts large and small particles (triggers).
  • A Humidity Sensor measures the relative humidity in the room.
  • An Air Quality Sensor detects airborne contaminants using a VOC sensor.
  • A Temperature Sensor keeps an important measure for a controlled environment.

The device connects to the cloud via WiFi. In the cloud, air quality data is processed using proprietary algorithms specifically designed for allergy asthma and COPD sufferers, searching for patterns that could lead to allergy or respiratory attacks.

More importantly, warnings and customized alerts are sent so that you can alter the environment or remove yourself from danger before particles and toxins build up to critical levels. Input each family member for a more customized approach. Also, you can place multiple sensors in different rooms, then link them all together for complete home air quality monitoring.

The system is easy to set up. Plug-n-Play technology allows the system to be configured and running in minutes.

The AlerSense™ unit stays in constant communication with the cloud. When users input their feedback by tagging the date and time of attack, the system will analyze the data to determine the air quality issues  prevalent when they had the attack. AlerSense™ learns you and your specific triggers, and adjusts sensors to alert you and your family when similar conditions reappear.

Indoor air quality has been named by the EPA as a top five public health risk. Need for monitoring our air is well known, and there are other devices on the market that focus on air quality. The trouble with this approach is that it doesn’t directly help respiratory sufferers with their problems.

Here are a few other things that make AlerSense™ the best solution for preventing respiratory attacks.

Right at Home
There’s nothing more important and personal than breathing.. The AlerSense™ system brings the same technology used in the clean rooms of the largest microchip manufacturing companies directly to consumers.

Nanotechnology allows industrial-grade sensors to function within home units. At the same time, cloud capability and advances in smartphones set the perfect table for an IoT solution. AlerSense™ is the first consumer-priced product to take advantage of all of these components, combining them into an early detection system.

AlerSense™ is a smart choice as part of an overall allergy, asthma and COPD management plan in a number of settings, including at home, a baby’s room, physicians’ offices, workplace, schools, hotel rooms, rental units, daycare centers, senior care facilities and athletic facilities.

Always Improving
AlerSense™ is the only system that adapts to user feedback and becomes smarter. When users input the time and date that they experience symptoms, the system checks against the air quality and particles at that time. The sensors can then adjust to be more sensitive to those particles, and the system can give alerts earlier.

The AlerSense™ prototype is tested and proven. We have conducted successful field tests, and are involved in 2 university studies at the moment including the University of Leicester in the UK and the University of Porto in Portugal.

The Asthma Society of Ireland issued our first certificate of approval.

We’re ready to relieve the anxiety of the 1 billion plus people globally who suffer from asthma, and those with allergies, COPD and other very serious respiratory issues.

350 units have already been pre-sold. We’re on the verge of having completed the manufacturing of our initial orders, and we’re gearing up to handle 20,000 units per month.

The widespread potential for implementing the AlerSense™ system has attracted plenty of distribution interest across industries. We’re in discussion with a top three U.S. automaker about an automotive air-quality sensor. Major pharmaceutical companies want to help us put our sensors in homes, and medical suppliers wish to see our sensors in hospitals. A wearable sensor is another product in development.

Our push into the IofT space has caught the media’s eye as well.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that founder Skip Sanzeri lives and breathes AlerSense™. The idea for the company came to him as a lifelong sufferer of allergies. He was frustrated that everyone seemed resigned to tolerating “attacks,” and couldn’t understand why technology was so slow to come to the aid of nearly 30% of the global population affected by allergies, asthma, COPD or other respiratory issues.

Given sensing technologies, the cloud, and smartphones, he was certain that it was possible to come up with a system that could monitor air quality and warn those with respiratory issues about invisible dangers.

A determined search took Skip around the globe and through over 40 companies to put together the best air quality team on the planet. Together they created AlerSense™.

Skip Sanzeri - Founder & CEO
Skip is a Silicon Valley entrepreneur who started his career at an early age by buying a Gold’s Gym in the San Francisco Bay Area, building 5 more and selling them to 24 Hour Fitness. He later helped grow the IAC division of Ziff-Davis publishing to $250 million (sold to Thomson Publishing). He then joined Sequoia Capital-backed Quote.com (acquired by Lycos). Skip then founded and funded the first open source strategy firm – Open Source Group. In his spare time Skip enjoys baseball, yoga, and studying quantum physics.

Dr. Stephen Daniels - CTO, CSO
Dr. Daniels has published over 200 scientific papers on plasma technology and sensor systems. He has founded several technology companies and designed dozens of products. He is currently a faculty member in the School of Electronic Engineering at Dublin City University and leads a large, multidisciplinary research team.
