Quick Pitch

Lets face it, all surgery carries risk. Tissue must be damaged to be repaired. At ARGCOS Biomedical, we believe in minimizing trauma caused by surgical tools and in reducing post operative recovery time. Our focus is on the design and production of tools specifically created to work in synchrony with the human body.

Product/Service Details

Our debut piece, the H.E.A.D. (Helical Epidural Access Drill) is a craniotomy drill bit that can differentiate between hard and soft tissue. Its primary application is for drilling into the skull to access the brain. The leading market competitor (cranial perforators) are prone to seizure 10-20% of the time, do not possess any degrees of freedom in their operation. In the event that their control mechanism fails, the perforator will puncture the patients brain. We eliminated multiple moving parts and created a single body design that allows for stepwise advancement, pivoting of the bit, and eliminates seizure. This drill bit was designed with input from the direct customer: neurosurgeons.

Traction & Accomplishments

The H.E.A.D. bit is the winner of two engineering and design awards from the University of Utah School of Medicine Center for Medical Innovation. The patent for this device is now in process and further refinements have been made to its function and usability.

How We're Different

Our company's principle is based on listening implicitly to the needs of the customer. We are able to take their desires and transform them to a product. We never start by designing the product, rather we design components that fulfill the unmet needs of the customer. The question is always " if you could create the best version of this tool, what would it be able to do? Elements are designed to address these unmet needs and thus the tool is created. We work with the safety of the patient and comfort of the surgeon in mind because the next patient might very well be us!

About the Team

Olaotan Elenitoba-Johnson

Innovator, Visionary, Futurist

I came to the United States in 2002 to pursue a career in medicine. I have always had a fascination with the workings of the human body and saw myself becoming an orthopedic surgeon. I changed course after working for the VA hospital as a biomedical research assistant, where I found my passion for creating medical devices. Most of my work involved the evaluation of implants for use on returning war veterans. I became very familiar with head injuries and amputations. In shadowing physicians, one thing stood out. A surgeon is only as good as the tools that he has at his disposal. I decided that would be my calling: to create tools that made an expert out of any surgeon anywhere.
