We're Taking Atari Back to its Roots.

We want to buy the iconic Atari brand, re-launch it, and give it back to you on the GCW Zero portable gaming console.

Atari is the Godfather of gaming.  It is an icon that represents more than just a gaming company: it is one of the most recognizable names in gaming history.  The company recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and its assets are going up for sale.

We believe a new entity could be launched using smart, lean development teams and next generation hardware fit for today’s gaming environment.

GCW Zero is an open-sourced, handheld gaming platform that is creating the next wave of gaming:  powerful enough to run classic PC games, emulate the game consoles we grew up with, and run homebrewed games seamlessly at high frame rates.

We want to combine the classic gaming experience of Atari with the awesome power of today’s handhelds - like the GCW.

We need your support and feedback to make this happen.

Atari Classic Gaming + GCW: The Future

Our immediate goal is to retain the brand and intellectual property rights around Atari’s classic games so that we can re-invigorate those titles.  Our first venture toward this goal will be re-launching them using the GCW platform.  There are lots of other possibilities.

GCW Handheld with Atari Games.  We want to bring you back to your childhood sitting in your living room playing your favorite Atari games from years gone by. Spark that innocence from your childhood and make you relive it again.

The Next Generation Atari Console - By GCW.  Dual Core MIPS or ARM Quad Core processor at least 1.5GHz or higher per core. 1GB ram or higher, and multi touch Retina IPS display, responsive dual analog controls, responsive dpad, four shoulder buttons. Six actual control buttons. (This will be a console in the future 2015 or later with compareable hardware to that time period.)

License to Third Party Developers.  There are thousands of ways to extend the Atari franchise in games, hardware and accessories licensed through third party partners.  We would like to engage those groups directly and push hard to revitalized the Atari community.

Atari’s most valuable asset is the brand itself.  There aren’t many video game companies that are as universally recognized with both publishing and hardware like Atari.  Atari’s name alone owns an entire generation of gaming.

Atari owns over 200 game titles including Asteroids, Breakout, Centipede, Missile Command, Pong,Tempest, Yar’s Revenge, and Backyard Sports.

The Team

The GCW team is comprised of industry veterans who understand the future of gaming but also have a strong affinity toward the retro classics.  We designed the GCW to take advantage of our passion for classic gaming.

Justin Barwick (GCW) was a retailer of the now famous Dingoo A320, GPH Caanoo, and Gemei A330 consoles. His contact with the communities around these handhelds gave him a good insight into what the customers wanted. He tried to get the manufacturers to engage with the community to improve their devices, but they didn't and kept producing handhelds that were not quite what the users were looking for. So Justin decided to do things differently and started with the GCW Zero, where the community was involved from the start in designing the device and building the software for it.

Kirk Shepherd (qbertaddict)  is the lead tester of the hardware and software for GCW. He promotes the device via YouTube and other internet resources. He is also a tech lead of the QA process for the GCW Zero. He is a core member of the team and without him we would not be where we are today. His YouTube channel contains many promotional/demonstration videos of the Zero.

Maarten ter Huurne (mth) is a freelance software engineer who started programming on the 8-bit MSX and never really left the system, as he's now one of the developers of the openMSX emulator. He's been a Linux user for over a decade, but only became a kernel hacker a couple of years ago when starting OpenDingux for the Dingoo A320. Maarten works on the operating system and toolchain for the Zero.

Paul Cercueil (ayla) is a student of embedded systems and is learning more about them by actually building them than by lectures. Paul is the other main developer of OpenDingux and wants to bring this work to a broader audience with the Zero. When it comes to retro gaming and homebrew, he is a big fan of the Dreamcast.

Steven J. Hill (sjhill) is an embedded systems engineer who has worked on both civilian and military software using Linux and RTOS platforms. Steven is currently employed by MIPS Technologies, Inc. and is a Senior Staff engineer responsible for their contributions to the Linux kernel. He was immediately attracted to the Zero when he learned it is powered by a MIPS core.

Artur Rojek (zear) has ported dozens of games to many open source handhelds, including the Caanoo and the Dingoo. He continues this trend on the Zero to ensure there are enough quality games to keep you entertained. In addition to porting other people's games, he's working on a game of his own as well. Dmitry Smagin (dsmagin) is a retro-game enthusiast who has ported and optimized many emulators for the Dingoo A320 and the Ritmix RZX-50. He is doing the same for the GCW Zero to get the best possible experience when playing classic games. Other retro projects he was involved in include a remake of The Last Mission and an SDL port of Adlib Tracker 2.

Jean-Michel Girard (alekmaul) is a homebrew veteran who started on the Game Boy Color, then moved on to other systems such as the Game Boy Advance, SNES, DS, Dingoo and now the Zero. In addition to designing his own games he ports games and emulators.

João Henrique (JohnnyonFlame) is passionate about open-source initiatives and gaming, Johnny eventually took porting and polishing software for handheld consoles as a hobby and a chance of acquiring more knowledge on GNU/Linux and programming.
