Kathryn Tilly is a different kind of skincare company - set out to solve a problem first, and provide top of the line products second. The founder saw suffering in the world with little effective action to correct it, so she aimed to use trade as a means to alleviate poverty in parts of Africa.

Kathryn Tilly monetizes the unique plants that grow in Africa by employing local workers to harvest these goods and turn them into natural skincare products. The skincare line is all natural and supports the local communities that create it.

One of those deciding factors is ethical impact. When you pick up a skincare product, do you ask yourself:

Unfortunately it’s hard to determine where our goods come from and the kind of impact it makes. Consumers have to make tough, often quick choices when it comes to what they purchase.

Kathryn Tilly is skincare that makes that choice easy - ethically sourced natural ingredients, so buyers can feel good about their purchase. Products are effective and competitively priced, while providing a positive impact on the world

The founder saw suffering in Africa and countless failings to right it.  Charity wasn’t working. Nature reserves weren’t working. Trade works.

Kathryn Tilly combines the effectiveness of fair trade with a highly desirable market, skincare, in order to support local African co
mmunities with jobs and education. The company also gives 5% of all sales back to charity, too.

Africa has a huge variety of plants with countless benefits. Instead of using harsh chemicals and artificial ingredients, the skincare line uses the natural solutions the Earth provides and no preservatives.

Most of Africa doesn’t have unemployment benefits and has high unemployment rates. Which means, when people fall on hard times, there’s no help. Where possible, Kathryn Tilly favors uplifting projects that have the potential to dramatically improve the quality of life for those effected and helps bring prosperity to local communities.

By buying directly from local
leaders and not middle men, we
ensure the p
eople who need the money get it.

By paying higher and fair trade wages or fair for life wages we are enabling others to benefit through classes, education, expansion and more employment opportunities. By focusing on organic or wild sourced ingredients we are ensuring that organic and  sustainable practices and teachings are passed on, which better the land, people and wildlife.

Buying Namibian Myrrh essential oil directly from the Himba tribe is a way to help the people become financially self-sufficient without interfering with their ancient customs and culture.

In Namibia, the extra income the women get from collecting the fruit of the Marula and Mongongo has made such a difference that local women now plant trees around the village.

Our Lesothan Rosehips come from an area with some of the highest unemployment rates in Africa (30%). In an area of no employment possibilities. We give them hope

In Morrocco the women’s cooperative we work with not only teaches the local women business skills and how read and write, but also how to protect the endangered argan forest. We also plant 1 argan tree in the rural region forests of argan cooperatives for every 1kg of argan oil used.

Our Rose Geranium essential oil helps support a region still devastated by war in the DRC.

Our Frankincense comes from very poor Somalian harvesters who have been collecting the resin sustainably for generations. They didn’t have an outlet to market, until now.

Ugandan orphan girls from the age of 14 - 25 are being taught how to farm passionfruit and are allocated land and six months training so they can earn an income and set themselves up for life.

80 % of the population in Madagascar is extremely poor, they are dependent on natural resources for living. This often leads to destruction of the forest of which 90% is already threatened. Our partners help to educate people and find them sustainable income that adds value to the trees and also protects the forest. – Tamanu, Rarabe butter.

We get our Tea Tree Essential Oil from a very impoverished area of Mozambique with an unemployment as high as 25%. Our partners provide opportunities for those wanting to get out of extreme poverty, those with low or no education, suffering from malnutrition.

Closing the loop – Kathryn Tilly wants to close the circle  in terms of recyclability.

We want to develop a complete, efficient life cycle for our products, so that  they don’t end up in a landfill. We try and use our glass bottles and pipettes as many times as possible, before recycling them. We encourage our customers to return their empties for a free product.

Oils are sourced from plants in South Africa, Namibia, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Rwanda, Somalia, Kenya, Morocco and Tunisia. Then the product is created in the United Kingdom and distributed across Europe and the U.S.

Products will be sold on Kickstarter before launching online via our website and on Amazon.
