The Mine Shaft Brewing team is passionate about beer, with a long history of industry experience. We’ve worked in the beer category, specifically the craft space, since the 70's.

During its pioneer days in 1985, our team partnered with the Boston Beer Company, brewing batches of Sam Adams to help meet the growing demand for its popular beers. This provided an early introduction to micro-brewing and the changes that were about to begin in the evolving beer industry.

Leveraging our experience in the super premium, premium, premium light, sub-premium, malt liquor and flavored malt beverage categories, our brew crew has been involved in the development and introduction of both specialty and seasonal brews, including brewing, packaging, marketing and sales.

To this day, our team continues to brew world class, award-winning beers. Below are some of the craft brands and beer brands with which our group has been involved.

There’s no substitute for our experience. Our market research approach to the taste of our beers means that we will give customers exactly what they want and like. This is great for everyone... but, as much as we love making products that relate to people’s passions, as beer production and operations experts, we’ve also learned that brand and packaging are the most important drivers of beer sales.

We are building a brand, not just a line of craft products.

That’s why we’re also developing the most impressive digital presence in the craft brewery space. Most competitors are behind when it comes to social media and websites, whereas Mine Shaft Brewery has responsive design and is proactive in promoting the brand via digital channels.

That’s not all. On top of our long history in the beer space and industry-leading innovation, we have state of the art brewing equipment that will challenge the status quo.

Most craft brewers start out small, traditionally producing 500 to 1K BBL (barrel) the first year. Then, in year three or four, they initiate a capital raise to expand and increase production to 3-5K BBL a year. Ramping up production and capturing a bigger market share is a real struggle.

What does this mean? Compared to other craft breweries, we have the production capacity to open at a massive scale. MSB will be known as one of the fastest growing breweries by 2018 and nationally recognized as a Top 50 brewery within five years.

Tim brings to Mine Shaft Brewery a vision and vast experience in the craft beer space in diverse domains like finance, sales and consulting. Tim has been an entrepreneur, advisor, consultant, investor and executive of companies in beverage, auto, banking, green energy, and consumer goods. Tim boasts extensive involvement in successful new businesses, including capitalization, business development, sales, marketing, branding and PR. He also brings a substantial network of business relationships and executive management.

John brings a wealth of career experience as a CPA, CEO and CFO. He started an outsourcing company in 1992 that grew to $12MM in five years and was named one of the Inc. Magazine’s “Fastest Growing Companies” in 1997. John merged the company and became CEO in 2001, then sold his share in 2004. John graduated with a degree in accounting and spent six years with one of the "Big 8" CPA firms. Afterwards, he spent ten years with two large organizations as CFO and gained experience in operations, mergers and new business creation.

James brings 13 years of materials/purchasing management experience from time spent at the Stroh Brewery Co. He purchased over $600MM annually in packaging materials for eight domestic breweries. James brings procurement, inventory control, package development and service levels with 25 major suppliers. He was also responsible for the total logistics of all packaging materials, including price negotiation, production quantities, inventory control, warehousing and graphics coordination.

Scott has over 30 years of experience in marketing market research, new product development, and advertising including 12 years of experience with the Stroh Brewery Company. At Stroh, he was directly involved in coordinating the expansion of the Stroh Brand into 20 western states. As an assistant brand manager on Stroh’s/Stroh Light, his focus was on promotion programs, pricing, and new packaging changes. He supervised the development of Sundance Juice from initial product & package design, through product launch and national expansion. the precursor for the product now known as Izze Sparkling Juice. Since 1994, Scott has been the co-owner of Unisearch Partners, Inc., a custom market research company specializing in integrated quant-qual techniques and qualitative studies. The firm has been an industry leader in Super Bowl ad testing for over 15 years, testing SB ads for clients like Frito-Lay (Doritos), Anheuser-Busch and PepsiCo among others.

Charlie brings many years of regional and territory sales and has been a top achiever in all his previous sales management roles.

Ed has over thirty years of experience as a professional market researcher on both the client and supplier sides of the business. He is an expert in consumer research and an accomplished focus group moderator. Ed has been co-owner and president of Unisearch Partners, a custom marketing research and consulting company since 1994. In addition to his broad-based knowledge of consumer research, Ed Benfield brings considerable expertise in research design and quantitative analysis to the MSB team of advisors. He has 13 years of direct beer research experience as manager and director of market research at the Olympia Brewing Company in Washington and the Stroh Brewery Company in Michigan, and has served major clients in the beer industry during his entire 20 years with Unisearch. Among his specialties are the design, analysis and implementation of quantitative and qualitative studies on beer taste testing, sensory evaluation, brand / user imagery and advertising.

Richard brings over eight years of Stroh Brewery experience. Rich spent four years as Pricing Analyst / Corporate Pricing plus an additional two years as Associate New Product Manager, New Product Development with three more years as Associate Brand Manager for the Stroh’s brand.

Leslie brings 10 years of New Products and Branding experience from the Stroh Brewery and four years from Walt Disney. Leslie started her career with Stroh Brewery in pricing and worked her way up as Corporate Pricing Analyst, Field Pricing Analyst, Associate New Products Manager, Senior Associate Brand Manager, Responsible for all marketing functions for New Products, nationally distributed Old Milwaukee Brands, and the Stroh family of brands. Supervised new product introductions from initial concept through market launch. Developed and implemented brand advertising creative and media plans, national consumer promotion plans and regional refund programs. Determined market research needs and formulated research plan. Managed design and production of package graphics and merchandising materials. In addition Leslie administered $20 million annual price promotion budget.

Jay brings pro athletes on as product ambassadors into retail, distributor and club channels. He is also a Firefighter Paramedic for Unified Fire Authority, and goalie for the Utah Grizzlies.

Bernie brings 16 years of Stroh Brewery Company experience including Project and Pricing Analyst, National Retail Sales Administration, Puerto Rico, and International Sales and Marketing. Bernie developed and executed sales strategies in Asia, Europe, Australia/New Zealand, Middle East/Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. He’s managed international sales reps and planned, directed and coordinated marketing efforts. Bernie Increased international sales by 140% and expanded the number of export countries by 106% by increasing distribution and creating strategic sales and marketing campaigns. He expanded private label products in Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Brazil, and established a joint venture with Rajasthan Breweries resulting in the first foreign beer for sale in India. He has secured contract brewing arrangements with Sapporo, Cerveceria Chile, Loblaw’s (Canada), Bacardi-Martini, etc.

Dan brings over 30 years of outstanding industry management experience to Mine Shaft Brewing. Dan worked for over 17 years for Stroh, Schlitz and Miller Coors as a District, Zone and Unit Sales Manager. In addition, Dan also worked on the distributor side of the business for 18+ years in positions ranging from Sales Manager, Director of Sales/Operations to General Manager.

Ray is currently the President of Klimovitz Brewing Consultants, Inc. where he acts as Alternating Proprietor (AP) Brewmaster for a number of craft brewers. Ray has 40+ years of experience in the beverage industry, including tenure at Joseph Schlitz Brewing Co (Milwaukee) and The Stroh Brewery Company (Detroit) where he was Director of Brewing & Special Products. Ray is well respected within the brewing community, belonging to several professional associations including the Master Brewers Association of the Americas (MBAA) where he was their Technical Director (1999 - 2010). The MBAA also presented its Distinguished Life Service Award to Ray in 2011.Ray also has participated as a judge at the annual Great American Beer Festival in Denver as well as serving as editor and contributor to several leading brewing publications.
