Why we need your help

Desperate times call for desperate measures, so I'm asking for any and all help to keep our doors open.  Although we've been in business for 8 long years of literal blood, sweat, and tears, we've always been playing a game of catch-up with the state of Virginia, and now that's come to a head.

This is a minority, woman-owned business for the maintenance, repair, and tuning of motorcycles.  I do not work at my own company (though I do plenty of work for the company without ever being paid), have never made a dime off the business, live in a meager house, drive an old vehicle, and I work a full time job to eek out an existence in Loudoun County.

The History

In late 2006 Richard (Rick) Beggs underwent one of the most difficult challenges of his life. After holding the American Dream it quickly became a nightmare, and 20 years of building a business fell apart. Richard lost his business, lost his home, and almost lost his way, but through this all he kept moving.  I loved him and hated to see him so lost in life.  One day, while going for a jog, I came up with the idea.  Although only a half-breed, I decided to do what us Koreans know how to do best- start a new business.  This was going to be “our” dream now! I proposed the idea to him, and all of a sudden, I saw a spark in his eye- hope.  He ended up moving in with me and I took some equity from my house and the dice were rolled.  We argued back and forth with the name of the business, but in the end, since it was just the two of us, Rick and Rachel, he proposed RnR Cycles and I set out to design our logo.  To this day, we still argue which one of us in the logo is the backwards R.

Meanwhile, it took a while to find a properly zoned location for our business. We opened our doors much later than we anticipated, in July of 2007, but we were ready to take the lessons learned from Richard's hard loss, build on them, and go for it! Unfortunately, half the riding season was over since riding a motorcycle is only tolerated by most for 3 seasons in Northern Virginia.  And, we didn’t see the housing crash, or the 5 years of recession- nobody did. When people lost their jobs, business stopped coming in. Motorcycles were now a luxury item which less and less people were buying. The business plan we had was turned upside down but we were all in; there was no turning back for us. That first winter was one of the biggest test of our lives. Money was even more scarce than normal, arguments were about everything and anything, but we stayed with it, and with each other. It truly feels like we have never stopped fighting to break even.

When we didn't have enough money to pay the most essential bills, I would not pay Richard a paycheck and that, of course, severely affected our finances at home.  It would then become a balancing act for us on a personal level as well.  Just so you know, to this day, Richard only has made on average just under $25,000 a year as income- about $12/hr.  We would catch-up a bit and then the winter months would hit again. I was having to rob Peter to pay Paul- the interest and penalties that accrued were killing us.  I’m sure there are some reading this who have known this feeling all too well at some point in their lives.

I can't say I wouldn't do it all over again, if given the choice.  I've learned a lot through this arduous adventure and I'm proud of contributing to the workforce and the services we provide.  If we can get over this hurdle, I know we can make this business successful and keep the doors open, not just for us, but for our 4 employees as well. Rick's knowledge, skill, and honesty have drawn people from as far south as Richmond, to as far north as Delaware – that’s not a fluke! It’s this fact that gives us the confidence to know we have more than anyone else to offer our friends and customers.

We've made the change going forward in our financial process so that we are not faced with these issues in the future.  I know we should have done this a long time ago, but when you don't have two pennies to rub together, judgment gets cloudy.

Many may criticize my actions to resort to crowdfunding, but at this point in the game, I am swallowing my pride. Since I'm personally invested in this business with a second mortgage from my house and have a 4 year old son that I need to look out for (best thing I have ever accomplished in my life), I have no options, plenty of sleepless nights, and humbly ask for your donation in exchange for the rewards we can provide. I'm asking everyone that believes in us to show a bit of support- bringing business in would be great too! Look, I get it, this shop was our idea, but I think we’ve done a lot of good with it, and I know that we can keep doing great things. Help us keep our family business open so we can keep you on the road. We cannot express to you what your help means to us, especially now when we genuinely need it.

If know anyone who would want to support a local brick and mortar shop, or is a nice person that can understand our plight, please pass the information along.

How We're Different

We value our customers and our name. At RnR Cycles, we know you have a few area shops to choose from and we want to be your first and only choice.

Unlike a lot of other shops, we work on both old and new motorcycles, and have a wide range of experience on all makes and models- from American to import. Our technicians do not “just work on bikes.” They love what they do, they all ride or race motorcycles, and are involved with different events and venues.

RnR Cycles is also the only area shop that offers dyno-tuning. Rick Beggs of RnR Cycles has been offering state of the art dynamometer performance tuning for over 25 years. A dynamometer is the best alternative to live road testing which can be done right in our shop. It reduces the time it takes to troubleshoot a bike. A problem that occurs on the road can often be duplicated during a test drive on the dyno.
