SegUrWay is a Segway-sharing company out to change short-distance transportation forever. We have a patent-pending model where customers can find and access the nearest Segway via a mobile application. Once you have finished gliding to your destination, you simply end your rental in the app. The best part is that you are only charged for the distance you use it. SegUrWay is pretty much Car2Go with Segways.

Whether it’s avoiding the claustrophobic and typically unreliable bus system, the uncomfortable and exhausting bicycle ride, deferring the driving dread of traffic and finding a parking spot, skipping out on the fares and dependence on taxis, or eliminating the time constraints and physical rigors of walking, SegUrWay is built for the person on the move.

The Segway

The Segway or the Segway™ Human Transporter, may not seem all that remarkable at first glance, other than a high-tech scooter.  But people who have tried using one, claimed that it is much, much more.  It's a revolutionary way to get around.

Dean Kamen, the inventor of Segway, describes the machine as "the world's first self-balancing human transporter." Unlike a car, the Segway only has two wheels but still manages to stay upright by itself.

  • Small Footprint of 25” x 25”, (0.635m x 0.635m = .4m2).
  • Extremely efficient 1kWh = 38km range (1 kWh = 1 Unit, 15c).
  • Maximum speed limited to 20kph, similar to average cyclist or good runner.
  • Can be charged at any standard outlet

Pricing

Pricing. The pricing is made up of two components, a membership fee and usage fees. For membership fees, you can either pay $30 / year or $15 / 4 months. Each ride has a $0.25 service charge + $1 / mile in usage. If you go over or under a mile you will be charged on a relative scale ($0.73 for 0.73 miles, $1.24 for 1.24 miles etc.).

Segways and their Carbon Footprint

Segways have practically no carbon footprint.

The Segway PT also out-greens the most fuel efficient motor scooter in the marketplace, offering zero emissions and 24 miles-plus on a single 12 cent electric charge. Segways, like hybrid cars, charge themselves on the friction caused by starting and stopping motions typical of urban traffic.

If we are able to replace 10% of the 900 million 3 mile car trips with an eco-friendly Segway PT there would be:

  • 6.2 million fewer gallons of gas consumed.
  • 286 million fewer pounds of CO2 emitted everyday.

In two months time at that rate you would save enough gas to fill up the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas.

Segway Sharing System

The Segway was thought to be device that would change the world.  Some quotes describing the technology are as follows: “The Segway will be to the car what the car was to the horse and buggy.” (Dean Kaman) “The Segway is as big of an invention as the PC.” (Steve Jobs) “The Segway will be the fastest outfit in history to reach $1 billion in sales.” (John Doerr)

Looking at it ten years later this obviously hasn’t happened. However, we believe it is still possible. Cost was one of the main downfalls with a retail model, but under a sharing model, the technology is economical for the consumer. Paired with BLE technology and AT&T network connectivity, this is a feasible solution.

We will provide convenience to our customers by getting them to their destination faster and with less hassle. We will provide cost-savings since the SegUrWay sharing system will cost less compared than Car2Go, a cab, and most parking. Lastly, we will provide enjoyment since there is a fun-factor when riding a Segway. With SegUrWay, going somewhere will no longer seem like a dreadful task.

Pilot Program

SegUrWay is perfect for the student needing a quick hitch to school, the die-hard fan demanding a smaller gap between tailgate and kickoff, the 9-5 worker looking to maximize their lunch break, or just the everyday person trying to conveniently go from point A to point B.

Now that we have identified our target market, we are looking to launch our Pilot program in Austin, Texas where there is a large university with 30,000 people living within a 1 mile radius of campus. Based on a market research survey of student on the University of Texas campus, >70% of students would be willing to pay for the service.  More importantly, thanks to Car2Go's presence and initiatives like the Green Lane Project, the laws, the infrastructure, and the mindset are already in place in Austin, Texas for a business like ours.

We will saturate the geographic area with on-demand Segways so that a Segway is always within a couple blocks of the customer. Because what we are selling is convenience, saturation is a function of geographic space and number of customers. If there is not a Segway conveniently located, customers will opt for another option to get them to their destination.

Adapting Dean's quote from before, we believe Segways will be to bikes what cars were to horses and buggies.
